The helmet is a metaphor for the kind of vigilance that slowly becomes a way of life: expecting impact, rehearsing disaster, staying ready even when nothing is happening. It is absurd, excessive, and strangely comforting at the same time.
So yes, maybe the helmet is a metaphor. But good luck sneaking up on me.
